A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME. NATIVE SPECIES OF MAGALLANES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH CULTURE https://greenpleaseforthekids.org/a-little-bird-told-me-native-species-of-magallanes-and-their-relationship-with-culture/ https://greenpleaseforthekids.org/a-little-bird-told-me-native-species-of-magallanes-and-their-relationship-with-culture/#respond Fri, 30 Jul 2021 15:13:51 +0000 https://dekaz.net/gpftk/?p=1151 Since the dawn of humanity, biodiversity – that is, the variety of species that inhabit the planet, including their genes and the ecosystems that they make up – has been a source of development, well-being and identity for different types of communities. Throughout our evolution, human beings have depended on biological diversity both to satisfy our material and spiritual needs, taking advantage of the multiplicity of benefits that the natural environment provides us. These benefits, commonly known as “ecosystem services”, comprise the goods and services on which the population depends, such as provision services, that is, the contribution of species in terms of medicines, food and raw materials; regulating, for example, flood control, crop pollination and maintenance of air quality; support, which refers to the consequences of the interactions of many species that collaborate in the formation of the soil and the cycling of nutrients; and cultural services, which include, among others, the spiritual, aesthetic and educational value of species and ecosystems. Cultural services then refer to the intangible benefits that we as individuals or society receive from biodiversity.

Perhaps due to the fact of being intangible, many times the cultural value of biodiversity is forgotten or postponed by society when making decisions, and this has led to a progressive decrease in the knowledge that we have as human beings about the relevance that different things have. species for the construction of our own identity and well-being. However, this forgetfulness can be overcome with the small gesture of looking again at what surrounds us: the intimate relationship that has always existed between societies and nature.

The book «A little bird told me. Species of Magellan and its relationship with culture ”is an invitation to approach nature from another perspective, which directly links our way of life and that of our ancestors to the environmental heritage that surrounds us. In its pages we can (re) discover a wide range of cultural stories and more than 60 photographs of native species, where the fauna and flora of Magellan are protagonists and show that they have been and are part of the cultural heritage of the region.

The book is a project by Gabriela Simonetti-Grez, Executive Director of Kauyeken (author) and Gregor Stipicic, member of the organization (photographer), and is an Environmental initiative financed with resources from the Regional Government of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica with the approval of the Regional Council.

COLORING THE NATURE OF MY CULTURE https://greenpleaseforthekids.org/coloring-the-nature-of-my-culture/ https://greenpleaseforthekids.org/coloring-the-nature-of-my-culture/#respond Fri, 30 Jul 2021 14:33:01 +0000 https://dekaz.net/gpftk/?p=1049 The Nature of Chile, including its flora and fauna, is important in our cultural development. Many species of plants and animals are part of our myths, they give names to places, they are part of our food and medicines, or they are sung in poems and songs, among other expressions of their contribution to our culture and well-being.

Despite their importance, many of these species are threatened with extinction by our own actions. Losing them represents a biological and cultural impoverishment, so protecting our flora and fauna is an ethical imperative. To protect them we must value their importance in our daily lives and, to value it, we have to know it. The book «Coloring the Nature of my Culture» is a contribution of the Kayueken Association to the knowledge of Chilean nature, intended to value and familiarize our children with some of the numerous species of Chilean flora and fauna that contribute to our culture .

We hope that by coloring these sheets we will help conserve and value our nature and thus collaborate to protect it.

Green Please for the Kids and Kauyeken, an alliance created to reach all of Chile with the mission of disseminating and valuing the natural and cultural heritage of our country. https://greenpleaseforthekids.org/green-please-for-the-kids-y-kauyeken-una-alianza-por-la-valoracion-del-patrimonio-a-lo-largo-de-chile-2/ https://greenpleaseforthekids.org/green-please-for-the-kids-y-kauyeken-una-alianza-por-la-valoracion-del-patrimonio-a-lo-largo-de-chile-2/#respond Fri, 30 Jul 2021 06:42:33 +0000 https://dekaz.net/gpftk/?p=1012 Green Please for the Kids established an alliance with the Kauyeken Association to reach different areas of Chile with the mission of disseminating and valuing the natural heritage and its relationship with culture. The alliance seeks to strengthen the objectives of each organization by carrying out joint projects and activities to promote well-being and sustainable development from childhood.

Kauyeken is an organization destined to value, conserve and integrate the Chilean natural and cultural heritage in its different territories. The association was created in 2013 and operates with offices in the Metropolitan region and the Magallanes region, and has developed research, education and dissemination projects on the relationship between biodiversity, well-being and the identity of our country. For its part, Green Please for the Kids is an organization made up of women and girls, whose purpose is to generate educational processes, spaces for action, spaces for reflection and critical thinking for and with girls, boys, youth and adults, to promote care and the balance of diversity, both in the natural world and in the personal, social and cultural world for the good life and the sustainable future of the planet. Together, the two organizations hope to help girls and boys reconnect with the value of nature.

As a first action, both organizations are working on the project «Re-discovering the nature of my culture: naturalists in our daily lives», an initiative that aims to help girls and boys from Magallanes understand the relationship that exists between the nature and its culture through an interactive book for free distribution and workshops in all the provinces of Magallanes. In this project, Green Please for the Kids advises on the content and pedagogical methodologies throughout the process. Additionally, Kauyeken has made its publications on biodiversity and culture available as input to be used in the educational processes promoted by Green Please.

For Montserrat Vega Lavandeira, founder and director of Green Please for the Kids, «this alliance is and will be a great collaborative experience to benefit the knowledge of girls and boys accompanying them to immerse themselves in the appreciation of cultural and natural diversity in favor of inhabiting our earth from the understanding and personal and global well-being ”. Gabriela Simonetti-Grez, Executive Director of Kauyeken and member of the Board of Directors of Green Please for the Kids, “for Kauyeken the work with Green Please has been and will be key to advancing in a tremendous challenge that we have as a society: facing the extinction of the experience with nature, reconnecting children with their environment and the value that biodiversity has in itself, as well as for our good living ”.
